Cushion-cut diamond

A cushion has a square or rectangular outline with softly rounded corners. The shape comes in several facet patterns, so two cushion diamonds with the same measurements may show different light and character.

Several expressions within one shape

Traditional and modified brilliant patterns are both found. Some create broader areas of light; others produce a tighter, more fragmented sparkle. The length-to-width ratio determines whether the stone appears almost square or distinctly rectangular.

What to compare

• Whether all four corners have the same curve.
• Whether the sides feel straight, bowed or cushion-like in a balanced way.
• The facet pattern while still and in motion.
• Measurements in millimetres compared with carat weight.
• Colour and clarity in the actual stone.

Setting

The rounded corners are less exposed than sharp princess corners, but the setting should still support the stone evenly. A cushion works as a solitaire or with a halo or side stones.
