Natural diamonds

A natural diamond formed deep within the earth under geological heat and high pressure. Many are more than a billion years old. After mining, sorting and cutting, the polished stone is described through the 4Cs.

Origin and identity

A gemmological laboratory can determine that a diamond is natural and identify certain treatments. A standard grading report, however, does not automatically name a mine or country. That origin information requires a separate documented chain and a reporting service that expressly covers origin.

Quality

Natural diamonds are compared through cut, carat, colour and clarity. Two stones of the same weight may have different measurements, light patterns and prices. Read the report and view the actual stone.

Treatments

Some diamonds may be treated to alter their colour or clarity. A detected treatment should appear in the laboratory documentation. Ask about treatment before buying and verify that the details match the report number.

Responsible sourcing needs more than a label

The Kimberley Process regulates the trade in rough diamonds under a narrow definition of conflict diamonds. On its own, it does not establish working conditions, environmental impact or full traceability for a polished stone. Read our guide to origin and conflict-free diamonds, and ask for the documentation available for the stone you are considering.

Natural or lab-grown

The choice is not about which diamond is real; both are diamonds. Compare origin, production, report, price and the appearance you want to wear. Avoid promises about future resale value.
