Marquise-cut diamond

A marquise has a long, curved outline with a point at each end. Its large visible surface can create a strong size impression for its carat weight, depending on the stone’s depth and proportions.

Choose the proportion

The length-to-width ratio determines whether the shape feels broad or very slender. Both sides should mirror one another, and the points should sit on the same axis. Flat areas along the curves can disrupt the silhouette.

The bow-tie effect

Marquise-cut diamonds may show a darker area across the centre. View its strength in several types of light and as the stone moves. The aim is not to follow a single numerical value, but to choose a light pattern you like.

Protect both points

The points are exposed and should be protected with V-prongs or an enclosing setting. Ask whether any inclusions lie close to a point.

• Even curves and distinct points.
• The bow tie in motion.
• Measurements in millimetres and carat weight.
• The setting’s support and orientation on the hand.
