Lab-grown diamonds

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond produced in a controlled environment. It has essentially the same chemical, crystal, optical and physical properties as a natural diamond. It is not a diamond simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.

HPHT and CVD

The two most common production methods are HPHT, High Pressure High Temperature, and CVD, Chemical Vapour Deposition. Both create conditions in which a diamond crystal can grow. The growth method and any treatments may be described in the laboratory report.

How they are identified

Natural and lab-grown diamonds can look alike without advanced equipment. Reliable identification requires gemmological knowledge and instruments that analyse growth patterns and other characteristics. An older handheld diamond tester is not always sufficient to tell them apart.

The 4Cs and the report

Cut, carat, colour and clarity are also used to describe lab-grown diamonds, but report formats and terminology vary by laboratory. The current services from GIA and IGI are not structured identically. Always check the laboratory, report type and report number.

Environment and ethics

Production location, energy source, raw materials and supply chain determine which environmental or ethical claims can be substantiated. Being lab-grown does not by itself prove a low climate impact or good working conditions. Ask for specific, product-level documentation when it matters to your choice.

  • Choose the shape and size impression.
  • Compare the cut and the actual stone’s light pattern.
  • Read the report and check for any treatments.
  • Confirm the total price with the setting.
  • Choose from documented characteristics, not broad assumptions.
