Round diamond
The round brilliant is designed for an even, lively light pattern. The standard version has 57 or 58 facets and is the shape for which GIA issues an overall cut grade for diamonds in the D–Z colour range.
Appearance and light
The circular outline creates clear symmetry. The brilliant cut is designed to balance brightness, fire and scintillation. Differences in proportion show in the way light moves across the stone.
What to compare
- The overall cut grade where applicable.
- Polish, symmetry and measurements.
- How much of the stone appears light or dark in motion.
- Carat weight compared with diameter in millimetres.
- Colour and clarity in the chosen metal.
Setting
A round shape works in solitaire, halo and side-stone settings. The number of prongs and their height affect the ring’s profile, how much metal is visible and how easily the stone can be cleaned. Check that the prongs sit evenly and hold the diamond securely.
