Oval diamond

An oval creates a soft, elongated line with a brilliant light pattern. It may appear large from above for its carat weight, but this depends on the stone’s measurements and proportions.

Choose the silhouette

The length-to-width ratio determines whether an oval feels full or slender. There is no single correct ratio. View the outline at actual size and choose the one that suits the ring design and the hand.

The bow-tie effect

Oval brilliants may show a darker area across the centre that resembles a bow tie. Some effect is common. Assess how noticeable it is and how the area changes as the stone moves.

What to compare

• Even, soft sides without flat areas.
• Symmetry along both the length and width axes.
• The bow tie in several types of light.
• Measurements in millimetres alongside carat.
• The position of inclusions near the edge.

Setting

An oval diamond may be set vertically, horizontally or at an angle. The prongs should hold the stone evenly without disturbing its silhouette.
