Diamond colour

For most white diamonds, the colour grade describes how close the stone is to colourless. GIA’s scale begins at D and continues to Z, where a yellow or brown tint becomes increasingly visible.

The D–Z scale

  • D–F: colourless.
  • G–J: near colourless.
  • K–M: faint colour.
  • N–R: very light colour.
  • S–Z: light colour.

The difference between two adjacent grades can be difficult to see without controlled lighting and comparison stones. D is the highest colourless grade on the scale, but it need not be the natural choice for every ring or budget.

Metal changes the appearance

A diamond may look different in platinum, white gold, yellow gold and rose gold. The setting and room lighting also affect what the eye sees. Compare the stone in or beside the metal you intend to wear.

Fancy-colour diamonds

Diamonds with a distinct, desirable colour, such as yellow, pink or blue, are assessed outside the D–Z scale. The laboratory describes factors including hue, tone and saturation, and whether the colour is natural or treated.

Reading the report

The colour grade should appear in the grading report alongside details including shape, measurements, carat and clarity. Verify the report number with the laboratory and compare it with the details of the stone in front of you.
